welcome back to the Tally newsletter, your weekly source for DAO governance insights in the Tally ecosystem. we’re tommy and ellie and this week we’re diving into Relay: the Tally feature that enables gasless voting and free delegation.
✦ DEEP DIVE
you may have seen the recent announcement that Tally enabled gasless voting for ENS DAO. if not, check out the announcement:
if you haven't heard about Relay, the Tally feature that makes gasless voting possible, this newsletter is for you.
so what is Relay?
Relay enables DAOs to sponsor a transaction budget for their members, covering gas fees for specific or all transactions made in the DAO. Tally relays transactions for the DAO, making governance participation free for its members. this is a game changer as it helps to increase governance participation by removing financial barriers for DAO members.
Relay allows DAOs to send a powerful message of commitment to inclusivity and member engagement. Relay isn't just about removing gas fees; it's about amplifying the governance experience. it's about drawing in new members who value the chance to voice their opinions without the financial burden of gas fees weighing them down.
how it works
Relay leverages the power of OpenZeppelin Defender, a battle-tested framework designed for smart contract security and operations. by seamlessly integrating OpenZeppelin Defender with Tally's frontend, Relay ensures a secure and efficient process for gasless transactions within DAOs.
free delegation
Relay enables DAOs to provide members free delegation. similar to sponsoring a transaction budget for gasless voting, DAOs can allocate a dedicated budget for the facilitation of delegation transactions.
to utilize this gasless delegation service, token holders must meet specific criteria. for token holders who do not meet these eligibility criteria, conventional delegation remains an option with the responsibility of covering gas fees falling on the individual.
what this means for the future DAOs
Over 100k+ transactions have been made in DAO governance using Tally, racking up thousands of dollars in gas fees. these costs aren't merely numbers: they're tangible barriers that can hinder meaningful participation in a governance system that thrives on active engagement.
DAOs have a vested interest in encouraging members to participate in governance. active participation leads to better decision-making, stronger communities, and ultimately, greater success.
by subsidizing governance transactions through Relay, DAOs send a powerful message of commitment to inclusivity and member engagement. Relay isn't just about removing gas fees, it's about amplifying the governance experience. it's about drawing in new members who value the chance to voice their opinions without the financial burden of gas fees weighing them down.
